In The Bunyans, children's book author Audrey Wood writes that Niagara Falls were formed when Paul's feisty toddlers got dirty and had to be bathed in the Niagara River, though it's unknown if this story was first told by modern yarn-spinners or their 19-century counterparts. In some stories, when Babe died after growing to a ripe old age, Paul's tears were so large and so numerous that they formed the Missouri River. While trekking through Minnesota one winter, Paul and Babe left a myriad of gigantic footprints, known throughout the state as the “Ten Thousand Lakes” to its modern denizens. The ground disturbed by his burial became a range of picturesque mountains-one of which went on to have the faces of four presidents carved into its side. His insatiable appetite for pancakes unfortunately led to an early demise. Laughead, “weighed only two tons when Paul got him”-often accompanied the pair on their exploits. The Black Hillsīabe wasn't Paul's only beast of burden: Benny the little blue ox-an exuberant youngster who, in the words of folklorist William B. It was said that the rocking of his cradle was so violent that it sent surging tidal waves through the Bay of Fundy, which were so powerful that they're still going strong today. That Paul was a big baby should come as no surprise: Some storytellers maintain that it took nearly half a dozen storks to carry the infant to his bewildered parents in northeastern Maine. The Great LakesĪccording to one legend, after “inventing logging,” Paul and his trusty bovine dug some enormous holes-the Great Lakes-to quench the thirst of the men he assembled to help him cut down trees. Among the most popular tales hold that one day while hiking through New York, Paul tripped and threw his hand down to break his fall, thus inadvertently carving the aptly named Finger Lakes. Stories differ on how the Bunyans might've had a hand in creating these gems of the Northeast. Later in the year, while braving through a storm in search of firewood, Paul absent-mindedly dragged his heavy axe behind him, carving one of the world's Seven Natural Wonders in the process. The snow changed Babe's color permanently. The Grand Canyonīabe owes his distinctive hue to a bizarre meteorological event called “The Winter of Blue Snow,” in which (as the name implies) loggers and their countrymen endured an entire season of bright blue snowflakes. The water trickled southward and eventually formed the mighty Mississippi. One day, as Paul was leading Babe down a treacherous road with a heavy tank of water in tow, the container sprung a leak. According to folklore, during their travels, this clan constructed some of the continent's most breathtaking rivers, mountains, and canyons. His larger-than-life adventures often included his similarly gigantic wife and children along with Babe the Blue Ox. Tall tales don't get much taller than North America's most beloved lumberjack, Paul Bunyan. The resulting distributed measurements of pressure and model geometry are of significant interest in a variety of fields including aeronautical, hydrodynamics, and bio-medical engineering. The unique frequency response of these sensors will allow investigations into the unsteady fluid dynamics of these systems. The potential products of this research include pressure and skin friction sensors for unsteady flowfields including rotorcraft, flopping airfoils, compressors, and turbines. POTENTIAL NON-NASA COMMERCIAL APPLICATIONS (Limit 1500 characters, approximately 150 words) ISSI is currently pursuing commercial applications in these fields by developing and demonstrating production and research grade PSP systems to NASA and Federal Laboratory (DOD and DOE) customers. These systems would be employed directly in NASA wind tunnels and test stands. The resulting distributed measurements of pressure and model geometry are of significant interest to NASA in a variety of aeronautical applications. POTENTIAL NASA COMMERCIAL APPLICATIONS (Limit 1500 characters, approximately 150 words) The proposed Phase II system will include tools to facility combination of the PSP data with the model geometry. Rapid data fusion will enable understanding of the flow while the model is in the tunnel, and therefore, facilitate quick and accurate decisions as the test evolves. Combining pressure and deformation data quickly, a process we refer to as data fusion, is essential for productive wind tunnel tests. If an existing VMD system is available, it may be desirable to simply synchronize data acquisition with this system, and therefore, an external control capability is essential. The final goal is to produce a mobile system that can be integrated quickly into a wind tunnel and produce near-real time pressure and deformation data. During the Phase II program, the basic system will be expanded in several steps. This system utilized Porous Polymer fast PSP, lifetime-based detection, and a pulsed Laser for illumination to produce single-shot measurements. During the Phase I program, system components were identified, evaluated, and selected and a preliminary system for model deformation and unsteady pressure measurements was demonstrated. The overall objective of the Phase I program was to demonstrate a system for simultaneous measurements of unsteady pressure and model geometry. Focusing on full cartoons would create a bias in the favor of studios with the resources to produce theatrical features - but history has shown that many landmark achievements in animation have been produced with a variety of budgets, formats, and lengths. We chose the deliberately flexible element of a “sequence” because it felt the most focused: It is often in one inspired moment, more so than a single frame or entire work, that we are able to see the form progress. To capture an idea of that power and to narrate its history, we have charted the evolution of animation by considering 100 sequences throughout the medium’s history. Today, vast audiences understand what artists like McLaren were observing: that the invisible holds a marvelous power over us. The characters and intellectual properties it has drawn into existence are as relatable as Daffy Duck and as lucrative as Mickey Mouse. The medium that began to crawl thanks to the live performances of inventor Charles-Émile Reynaud and illusionist Georges Méliès has now matured into a complex and diverse art form - one that has seen new processes and cultural innovations in every decade since its inception. Animated cartoons fool the brain into believing that static images can move characters are “brought to life” by putting pen to paper or finger to a computer’s trackpad. That has largely remained true throughout the medium’s history, both frame by frame and over the course of a two-hour children’s movie. “Therefore, animation is the art of manipulating the invisible interstices between frames.” “What happens between each frame is more important than what happens on each frame,” the prominent experimental animator Norman McLaren (who makes the list with his short Neighbours, below) once explained. If you take an image of an open hand and an image of a fist and project the two in sequence, you’ll convey the illusion of a clench. It’s right there in the name of one of the earliest devices used to project slides: the magic lantern. All animation, whether it depicts a whistling mouse, a walking dinosaur, or a leaping superhero, is a kind of magic trick. Download the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool from the Microsoft Store If you look for reasons for why companies do layoffs, the reason is that everybody else is doing it. The tech industry layoffs are basically an instance of social contagion, in which companies imitate what others are doing. Why are so many tech companies laying people off right now? This interview has been edited for length and clarity. His recent book Dying for a Paycheck: How Modern Management Harms Employee Health and Company Performance–And What We Can Do About It (Harper Business, 2018) looks at how management practices, including layoffs, are hurting, and in some cases, killing workers. He’s met with business leaders at some of the country’s top companies and their employees to learn what makes – and doesn’t make – effective, evidence-based management. Dee II Professor of Organizational Behavior, has studied hiring and firing practices in companies across the world. Severance packages cost money, layoffs increase unemployment insurance rates, and cuts reduce workplace morale and productivity as remaining employees are left wondering, “Could I be fired too?”įor over four decades, Pfeffer, the Thomas D. Academic studies have shown that time and time again, workplace reductions don’t do much for paring costs. Moreover, layoffs don’t work to improve company performance, Pfeffer adds. Most problematic, it’s a behavior that kills people: For example, research has shown that layoffs can increase the odds of suicide by two times or more. When a few firms fire staff, others will probably follow suit. Here, Stanford News talks to Pfeffer about how the workforce reductions that are happening across the tech industry are a result mostly of “social contagion”: Behavior spreads through a network as companies almost mindlessly copy what others are doing. What explains why so many companies are laying large numbers of their workforce off? The answer is simple: copycat behavior, according to Jeffrey Pfeffer, a professor at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. This poll is accurate.Recent layoffs across the tech sector are an example of “social contagion” – companies are laying off workers because everyone is doing it, says Stanford business Professor Jeffrey Pfeffer.
